Dr. Haines Reports: 2018 Cataract Mission to Myanmar a Resounding Success!

“Tears of joy flowed freely over the faces of patients, their families and our teams”

Dr. Haines, President of the Give Me Sight Foundation

What is the most valued item in your possession? Consider your vision and the neural connections that make up the brain. The electrical chemical activity produces an image from the outside world in 200 femtoseconds, that is 200 millionth of a billionth of a second!

Now consider the lens that focuses that image on the retina. What if that became a CATARACT, so advanced that your retina and brain could no longer see anything but light?

Such was the familiar mission we faced in Myanmar this past November. A crack team of  Dr. Rebecca Armour; Nurses:- Joy Haines RN, Maggie Carlson RN, Nancy Silva RN and instrument-equipment expert Scott Carlson and Sam Armour joined a team from Thailand to restore sight to 145 Burmese patients.

Working side by side with our skilled Thai team, five patients, in the same room were simultaneously undergoing the most technologically advanced surgery. Three days later all had been completed without any serious complications!

The excitement of having this most valued possession returned (the gift of sight) is unparalleled in my experience. Tears of joy flowed freely over the faces of patients, their families and our teams. The relationships created from a successful humanitarian endeavor are yet another wonderful aspect in meeting like-minded medical personnel. Our lives feel more purposeful from this mission.

We have several photos for you to view of this mission. You can click here to check them out.

Now, on to Guatemala in January!

Soon we will take the same team to Guatemala for a combined effort with others (January 6-16). Your generous gifts to the GIVE ME SIGHT Foundation enabled instruments and an autoclave to enhance future surgeon’s efforts in this corner of the world. All expenses of the team from the US were borne by the individuals committed to improve the lot of the world’s poorest….and blind.

Thank you so much for your support!

Please DONATE to our Cause!

After reading Dr. Haines’ words above, will you think about donating to his/the Give Me Sight Foundation’s cause? Did you know that each cataract removal procedure costs around $5? That’s right! Dr. Haines funds his team’s travel and accommodations costs on our missions, so all donations that we collect go directly towards cataract removal procedures!

In addition to providing cataract removal surgeries, we also use generous donations to buy surgical equipment for nonprofit hospitals around Asia. This allows us to extend our organization’s goodwill year-round to help countless more people regain their gift of sight.

If you are inspired by our mission and want to return the gift of sight to someone in need, please donate to our cause! Remember, a simple $5 donation allows us to perform one surgery. Larger donations allow us to fund cataract removal procedures year-round.
